Last Night at the Red Carpet Inn by R.K. Kombrinck

Amazon Kindle

The night manager of a sleazy motel experiences the worst night of his life as a conversation with a friend leads him to a shocking discovery.

Every city has them whether they like it or not.  The cheesy, sleazy inns & motels that offer cheap rates with no questions asked. The place where you can pay for a night or even an hour, in some cases, without anyone blinking an eye and its places like this that might make it your Last Night at the Red Carpet Inn.

This is the Red Carpet Inn, where our protagonist,  Charlie works the night shift. Charlie has seen it all, meth heads, drunks, stiffs and prostitutes. Enter Dacey. Dacey is a “lady of the evening” and pays by the week for a room at the Red Carpet where she entertains her “dates”. Charlie has had a crush on Dacey for a long time. While he doesn’t look down on her for her profession, Charlie does worry about how they would deal with the inevitable question of how they met should he ever get the nerve to ask her out on a real date. Thus, Charlie is content to spend his evenings chatting with her and enjoying her friendship.  This is where the story really takes off and with it being a short story, I really don’t want to give anything away.

Suffice it to say, that Last Night at the Red Carpet Inn is another of R.K. Kombrinck’s short stories that I have greatly enjoyed. It’s not quite a horror story, but it definitely has some spooky and sinister elements that work to keep the reader going to the very end. The previous being Mrs. Lumley’s Masks and you can see my review of it (HERE).
