Evil exists. Evil walks the streets. And evil has spawned a diabolical new disciple in this white-knuckle thriller from New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen.

PECCAVI, the Latin word is scrawled in blood at the scene of a young woman’s brutal murder: I HAVE SINNED. It’s a chilling Christmas greeting for Boston medical examiner Maura Isles and Detective Jane Rizzoli, who swiftly link the victim to controversial celebrity psychiatrist Joyce O’Donnell–Jane’s professional nemesis and member of a sinister cabal called the Mephisto Club.

On top of Beacon Hill, the club’s acolytes devote themselves to the analysis of evil: Can it be explained by science? Does it have a physical presence? Do demons walk the earth? Drawing on a wealth of dark historical data and mysterious religious symbolism, the Mephisto scholars aim to prove a startling theory: that Satan himself exists among us.

With the grisly appearance of a corpse on their doorstep, it’s clear that someone–or something–is indeed prowling the city. The members of the club begin to fear the very subject of their study. Could this maniacal killer be one of their own–or have they inadvertently summoned an evil entity from the darkness?

Delving deep into the most baffling and unusual case of their careers, Maura and Jane embark on a terrifying journey to the very heart of evil, where they encounter a malevolent foe more dangerous than any they have ever faced . . . one whose work is only just beginning.

And thou knowest how thy Watchers, the fathers of these spirits, acted in my day: and as for these spirits which are living, imprison them and hold them fast in the place of condemnation, and let them not bring destruction on the sons of thy servant, my God; for these are malignant, and created in order to destroy. {page 220}

Gripping from the beginning, you watch her as she sun bathes on the lawn with her friends. You watch her little brother as he strolls out the lake each day but returns with no catch. The mother is always cheerful, a smile up on her face. Father is strong and firm. And you are not one of them, weak humans. You are far superior and you hold their fate in your hands.

No matter what you believe, God, Gods, Satan, nothing but evil in humans. The good vs. evil is always at play. The bad will always search out the behaved to destroy and rule. The light will always break through the darkness. Or, will the battle be different this time?

Lily Saul runs and hides so that he cannot find her, careful not to get close to anyone, careful to not stay in one place too long. She knows he is just behind her,  waiting for the time to take her. She was not nice to him, just as her brother, mother and father, and they deserve to die.

Terrible deaths and scenes are found and the police are out to find who could be sick enough to do such a thing. But there are a handful of people who know, this is not a mad person, but a person of mixed breeding. Between the fallen angels and humans who have succumbed to lust.

Smooth. Gripping. suspenseful. Evil. Dark. An ongoing war.

Tess Gerritsen you have wooed me again with your writing. First with Bloodstream, now with The Mephisto Club. It was a joy to spend my time curled on the couch with your book.
