The horror genre isn’t for everyone. What interests you most about this genre?
You have written hundreds of short stories and many books over the years. Have you ever started writing a short story only to realize that there was much more of the story to tell and you ended up with a book?
Right now, I am further developing almost all the novellas in Season of Rot. Season of Death (my first ever hardcover) just came out and it contains follow ups to both “The Queen” and “Rats”. Also, I just signed on with another publisher to write a sequel to the title novella. And Bigfoot War, a very personal book and project for me, has gotten such across the board awesome reviews, I am doing a sequel to it as well because looking back on it, I can see so much more to tell. (See my review of Bigfoot War HERE)So yes, I do it all the time though mainly with novellas not short stories.
I usually watch Dawn of the Dead and other films combined with re-reading the works that inspired me to write in the first place like Armor, H.P. Lovecraft’s tales, or David Drake’s military SF series Hammer’s Slammers.
I have been asked by publishers to do a werewolf book and have certainly written some werewolf short fiction that’s been published over the years but at this time, I just don’t have a full on werewolf novella or novel in me. I did however edit an awesome anthology last year called The Wolves of War that was kind of an homage to Dog Soldiers. The whole anthology was full of werewolf tales that mixed the war and horror genres from the Civil War and WWII to inner city gang wars and even wolves in outer space.
Currently I am writing Bigfoot War II and a new ZOMBIE novella featuring Martin Kier from Season of Rot. As to stuff coming out, the Simon and Schuster version of War of the Worlds Plus Blood Guts and Zombies will be out in Dec. 14th and around that time or before Coscom will be releasing my messed up future/western zombie book The Weaponer which is easily the most violent thing I have written to date. Sonar 4 Publications will also be releasing my first DARK superhero novel, The Human Experiment, in Dec. as well for which they’re holding a pre-order contest right now. And at some point, my joint book with David Dunwoody, Anti-Heroes, will be coming out which features my superheroes crossed Zs novella The Zombie Farm. Also, my first hardcover Season of Death was just released and I really hope folks who like Season of Rot will take the time to check it out. I am also in bunch of anthologies and such.
Though I likely should, I spend so much time writing (and I have a family) that my Facebook page is all I can manage at this point.
I watch Dawn and Night EVERY Halloween. It’s a tradition for me. I also try to squeeze in as many horror films and novels as I can during the month of Oct. to really immerse myself in genre and kind of refuel. There’s of course also trick and treat stuff with my son. This year, he’s going as Captain America.
